Steven West is not one of life’s beautiful people. He works in an uninspiring factory and goes home each day smelling of toxic glue. He is a simple man with simple needs and with little education or ambition. Like all of us he seeks happiness, maybe even love. A holiday in the beautiful tropical paradise island of Phuket, Thailand and a meeting with ‘The Flower Girl’ was going to change his life and his future forever in a way that he would never dream of. This is his incredible and moving story. In parts hilariously funny, in parts tearfully sad. When a dream turns into a nightmare and when love turns into Murder, it probably wasn’t the best holiday he had ever had! |

A Thriller with a twist!
A thriller with a twist..!, 23 Dec 2012
By Mac Paco (Spain)
This is a book based in Thailand on the holiday island of Phuket. It describes locations very accurate and people that know Phuket, they get the feeling that they are right back there. The story takes a not expected twist but knowing Thai culture it is not really too far fetched. Very good read indeed!

Hilarious!
Hilarious, self-depracating beginning and a good story., 29 Jan 2013
By John Lorimer - See all my reviews
Guy Lilburne writes this story from the point of view of a naive 38 year old bachelor o a first visit to the flesh spots of Thailand. The first chapters are laugh out loud. Then we get to the story which mixes the Thai belief in the spirit world with a journey of discovery for the man. A good read and a required read for blokes on flight TH910 London - Bangkok.

Chok Dee Khrap!
Chok Dee khrap........ 30 Mar 2013
By Tony Palmer
I found reading this book a joy, but frustrating at the same time. Knowing Steven was innocent and the dipstick detective he had on his case, I could see it ending in tears.
But it didn't and the journey he travelled was filled with ups and downs, laughs and tears.
It helped that I'm also a regular visitor to LOS so can understand the machinations of his whole experience.
The book has a great, fulfilling ending which I found very uplifting.
I'd recommend it as an easy-read, an insight into Thailand from someone who obviously knows. I... ... ... [+]

An odd thomas flavour!
An Odd Thomas flavor, April 8, 2013

Another good book by the author. This book is about a man who is basically clueless about the world. A nice guy who is unprepared for the reality of life in the big city.
I have read 4 books by this author and he never fails to deliver a story well worth the price and more. Thank you sir for your efforts.

A Damned Good Read
A DAMNED GOOD READ. June 11, 2012
By MIKE PETTIT
I have just finished reading The Flower Girl and absolutely loved it. I have read all of Guys novels and love his style and how he develops his story lines. I think he is probably the premier mystery and thriller author out of the U.K. today. Guy's stories of the mysteries of the East are enthralling and loaded with first hand knowledge of the people, customs, the very essence of the Land of Smiles.
I try to leave comments on Kindle UK from here in the US but there is a spanner thrown in the works somewhere and they don't go through.

So , I give Guy Lilburne 5 STARS on The Flower Girl and a BIGGER 5 STARS for Cocktails and Dreams.
Write faster Lad, write faster.

5 star review from Amazon
When "Forest Gump" meets "Suzie Wong" ... January 11, 2013
By miki 101 . Michaela
THIS Thai Novel has everything I like in a Thai novel: Joy, love, crime, hope, friendship, Thailand and Thai people's beliefs and religion, and a great personal development of the main character, too.
I started to read the novel late yesterday evening and I read it in 3 hours without stopping...
And it's one of THOSE Thai novels I will read once more for sure. Because it gave me all I want from a good read: I liked the protagonist as well as the minor "players", the setting in Puhket is perfect because... ... ... [+]
When "Forest Gump" meets "Suzie Wong" ... January 11, 2013

Because it gave me all I want from a good read: I liked the protagonist as well as the minor "players", the setting in Puhket is perfect because I love that island, and it was the first time someone wrote - something positive about Thai prisons! :)
The story starts with Steven West, 38 years old, is leaving Manchester/England for the first time in his live. Destination: Thailand, Island of Puhket. He is not the sharpest knife in the drawer and not really ugly, but somehow ... insignificant.
At first it's a bit like watching Forest Gump meeting Suzie Wong :)
After his first adventures involving bargirls, a black eye and a massage parlor, he gets himself a scooter for exploring the island. He also has gotten a certain insight about his money, Thai girls and lady drinks ...
Then he meets Pin the Flower Girl. She is selling roses in the streets - and is visibly pregnant. Her Ex, a Leeds character called Dean has a tattoo and a temper, and slowly Pin opens up to Steven and tells him her sad story. Then, on one of their excursions - after visiting the Zoo and a temple where a monk gives them both his blessings and a wristlet to Steven, Pin shows him her secret place. Where the story with Dean ended once and for all...
Steven's fate takes an ugly turn when the police comes to arrest him for the murder of Pin and her unborn child. The leading Detective on the case is a playboy called Sawat Deewat. He is only for 12 months in the police for making merit with Buddha. And, at first he has no intentions to listen to Steven's story - because it's too bizarre to believe.
So Steven will be put into the Puhket Provincial Prison, where he will have some strange encounters. But being a kind character with a jai dee - a good heart - he will find friends and supporters. And the truth will come out and Steven will find his real vocation...
Having read The Thai Dragon, The Kiss of the Dragon, and Cocktails & Dreams, this is an entirely different kind of story.
And I liked it because who knows Thailand and the Thai a bit, also knows something about their beliefs in Phii - ghosts. The foreigner will laugh and say - what a superstitious kinda folks. I say - lucky they are, with an imagination so colourful we farangs can't even imagine in our dreams ...
