Cats land on their feet...
..... but the story "Jump" will tell You something different.

Because a "white buffalo" can never change into a "tiger" even when he has been called like that for a long,(money-)lasting time ...

So, in this collection of short stories You can find everything the (ab-)normal Thai zoo of "farang con/vs b-girls" has to offer.

"Birthday Girl" really made me cry for the real love that the story radiated - I'm female, so mai pen rai ...

"B.A." is so acute that You'll only wonder why there isn't a "trademark" sign ...

"Village People" is soo very sad, I'd want to ignore the whole story, but...

"This is Thailand" is the whole farang/thai-marriage-and-take-her-home-to-...Land story in 3 pages...

"The Funeral" shows the real sense of life or death from two different points of view.

"Hope" shows that there is no hope left in one man living too long in Krung Thep... and "Luck" is all the opposite - lucky man - lucky woman...

And so I can go on and on, with mostly positive opinion about the stories - but what beats them all is "Ray's List of Bangkok Women # 1-7 ...

I cannot say I loved all of the stories in the book - that would be impossible, but I liked the majority of them.

The author is - as far as I can see - in full development and promising.
He surely has a lot of talent but sometimes this book lacks a smooth-over - if You know what I mean :)
So I also bought his books Bangkok Express and Bangkok City.

Maybe I will write something about the experiences...

I haven't made up my mind about this kid, Newman. That could be because I am jealous of his talent or his age, which one I am not sure. I see streaks of brilliance coupled with times of trying too hard, depending on cliches and idioms too much and awkwardness. He's stepping in the ring with some heavy hitters like Timothy Hallinan, Christopher G. Moore, Jake Needham and John Burdett - they are the top tier of the authors who depend on Bangkok as a central character. And they are all his senior by 25+ years. Someone's got to lead the pack of the next generation and it very well could be James A. Newman. He's got humility and self deprecation down - two qualities you don't always find in young (or old) authors. And a nice writing style when he's being creative. Right now his novels, BANGKOK CITY and BANGKOK EXPRESS are at the better price point at Amazon, but I enjoyed Thailand After Dark and if you've read this far I think you will too.
