In recent years Thailand has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the number of tourists coming to visit this fascinating and beautiful country.
Thailand has been discovered, and hordes of travellers are now flocking to experience the diverse culture, friendly people and delightful beaches for themselves.
Despite this rapid increase in tourism, there are still villages in the Northeast of the country where things have changed little for hundreds of years.
Join the author during his unexpected six-month sojourn in Northeast Thailand. Meet farmers, fishermen, spirit doctors and Thai boxers and share in his misadventures as he comes to terms with the warm community of a rural Isaan village.
Sometimes hilarious, often touching, occasionally tragic - but never dull - this book takes the reader into the heart of the Northeast, and provides an insight into a traditional way of life and a culture that is fast disappearing. |

Peter's book flows and is easy to read. It's light hearted and a good read. He takes off for the land of smiles and ends up in a few twists and turns. You follow him from the South in one of Thailand's notorious red light areas (won't say which one, don't want to reveal all).

Peter's unfortunate circumstances lead him to Udon Thani in the North East of Thailand. As he travels there with a cute, beautiful Thai girl he meets, things take an unexpected turn leaving him pondering his next move. As life unfolds for him he begins to embrace life in a village. Experiencing genuine Thai culture, fitting in with the locals, trying to make sense of his new culture.
Throughout this book you get a sense of understanding about how and why Thais do things and think the way they do.
He enjoys his new surroundings and starts to live like a Thai, even experiencing work that Thais in the North East would typically do.
As a reader, you find yourself laughing at his misadventures, and cheering him on in others. Just being himself he hopes to fit in and become accepted by the villagers, but, at times the 'stupid farang' becomes the butt of much humour for the locals. Will they warm to him and accept the outsider?
Author's note; thanks for taking the trouble to review, glad you liked the book.

Review on Thai-Isaan.com Website
The characters and the events described in this book are to be believed. They could not have been made up. Because they are real, the reader finds himself living the various experiences of the writer. This makers the book very entertaining and informative to someone interested in Thailand and especially Isaan. As farangs are becoming more interested in Isaan these days, this will be a major draw for prospective readers who will delight in the author's adventures.

A delightful read that begins with an unfortunate accident in Pattaya and ended up with a memorable holiday in Ban Lek, a village in Isaan (North East Thailand).
The blundering farang (Westerner or 'Ang Mo' begins his story on a wtwr-ski in Pattaya and finds himself crashing into a fruit vendor's handcart, that sends splinters of water scooter, pieces of fruit and fragments of wood flying.
He found himself in a police station and left 150,000 baht poorer.

Feeling sorry for himself and faced with the possibility of cutting short his holiday, he was saved by an Issan bar-girl who invited him to stay at her home where his $ can stretch much further.
I folowed the author to Ban Lek and enjoyed the village life, amusing encounters with farmers, fisherman, spirit doctors, Thai boxers and even an ostrich and learned about the strange customs and people of Isaan.
Needless to say, I felt a tinge of sadness when it was time for him to say goodbye to the villagers.
Author's note; thanks for your kind words Jane, glad you enjoyed the book.

This is a really good book which I enjoyed reading. Thanks for giving an insight into rural Thai life as I am married to an Isaan girl but she lives in the city so I have not really seen the rural life. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Thailand.
Author's note; thanks very much for taking the time to write in, Keith, glad you liked the book.
